Lasciamo spazio al verbo del death metal che questa volta si è perfettamente incarnato nella band olandese :MANGLED !! Interview Mangled by Pepijn Houwens Lord Glacial 1- Hi guys ! First of all can you tell me about your past period, sorry but "Most Painful Ways" it 's the first mangled cd i hear . A very brief history of the band: we started in 1989 and released two demo tapes (of which one was released as CD later on), one CD-single, entitled "....in emptiness" and one full length CD, entitled "Ancient Times", before the latest product, which is "Most Painful Ways". Of course Mangled hasn struggled with the inevitable line-up changes throughout the years, as well as other depths and heights which are not worth mentioning here. For more information you can check our biography, which is also available on the web (http://listen.to/mangled ). 2- What was the approach with DeathMetal for us and why you persevered to play this genre? There is a reason or more of one reason ? When we started, we were just a bunch of guys jamming, playing covers from bands like Testament, Whiplash, Motorhead, and so on. Then we heard "Scream Bloody Gore" and we were immediately sold to Death Metal! So we tried some new songs from bands like Asphyx, Sempiternal Deathreign and Paradise Lost. From this we slowly evolved towards writing own material, which was of course, Death Metal! This resulted in forming a real band, Mangled, in 1989. And from that time on we never quit playing Death Metal! 3- What you would say to all the "little females" that have let to play the holy death metal to fall in the arms of ......dollars ? We of Mangled never did it for the money. If we would, we'd make pop-music or something, not the extreme underground noise we love to hear and to play. 4- A lesson about the title of the album please..... 'Most Painful Ways' are the most painful ways to die. You can find various examples of it in the lyrics. It's not a concept album or something like that, but the thread in lyrics is horror and pain which is also expressed in the album cover. 5- Three months ago i heard a cover of " Visions from the dark side" on the Morbid Angel tribute played by you....so how much is important for the band this excellent ensamble ? Morbid Angel are death metal ? We got the opportunity to record one song for a tribute CD to Morbid Angel, to be released by Dwell records. Since Morbid Angel is one of the earliest and most influential Death Metal bands AND still one of our favorites, we didn't have one second a doubt to take the offer. We decided to take a cover from the 'Altars of Madness' album, since this is Morbid Angel's first and one of the most important Death Metal albums ever. So after some consideration within the band we decided that it should be 'Visions from the dark side'. 6- If a metal guy kill somebody hearing your lyrics what could to be your thought ? Ridiculous! People do these kind of things because they're insane or because of their education in narrow-minded towns which lead to serious deflections of thoughts. This has absolutely nothing to do with listening to any kind of music, like for instance Death Metal. There are lots of people listening to Death Metal which are not murderers, and there are lots of murderers who don't listen to Death Metal. One has nothing to do with the other. 7-Do you think the extreme music is only for extreme people ? No. Take myself for instance. In 'normal' live I'm not extreme at all but very 'mainstream', with a normal job and so on. But maybe that's why I have to play in a brutal Death Metal band to express and release all negative feelings about my ordinary live. 8- What you concept of " extreme" ? Depends. There are a lot of things going on around the world which I call extreme, mainly in the sphere of sex, horror, violence and warfare. But there are other people who won't mention this or may even be used to it. Others would call Brutal Death Metal extreme! So it's a personal matter. 9-Is in program a tour in all Europe ? We hope so. Nothing's scheduled uptill now, but hopefully a full European tour will be possible later this year. Until that time, we will do some 'loose' gigs, mainly in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and some festivals this summer like 'Obscene Extreme' and 'Nuclear Storm', both in the Czech Republik. 10- What are the things you not tolerate in this society ? In general, I think that I'm very tolerant, but things which can make me mad are injustice, abuse of the weak (like children, women, animals..), liars, (neo-)nazis and all other political extremists, christians and all other fanatic religious people, pollution, violence and warfare and so on, and so on. It's a dirty world we got to live in, but I'll try to make the best out of it. 11- Is there a dream you would to live soon ? It would be really nice if I could live on making Death Metal. I know that's an illusion because life in Holland is very expensive and we don't even earn any money making this kind of music, so we always have to work beside it. One has to be of the category Cannibal Corpse / Morbid Angel I think, before you can earn a living with Death Metal. I don't foresee that happening to Mangled, but it's a nice dream anyway. 12- Let a counsel to write nice and cool death metal song ? I can't tell you how to write Death Metal music; that's something I'd leave to the musicians in our band. However, here are some tips about how to write Death Metal lyrics. Just watch Discovery Channel a lot and write down every subject you can think of in a Most Painful Way. Next, when you hear the rough music of a new song, take the subject you think that's best fitting to it and start composing verses about it on the right places and rhythms. Now you are ready to Scream and Bleed! 13- Waht your fave bands and what you hate in the mainstream ....and in metal world? I really hate teenage pop songs like Britney Spears, Aqua, Spice Girls and all that other smooth commercial shit. What they do has nothing to do with making music, but everything with clever advertisement and quick money making. Im also tired with all these so called 'guitar' bands who all do exactly the same, but are played on the radio over and over again, especially their ballads. And that's even worse! What I do like is very personally and greatly depends on my mood. Sometimes I like to listen to old 70's disco hits, sometimes I like 80's pop, but most of the time I like to listen to all kinds of Heavy-, Speed-, Trash-, Death- and Black-Metal from the late 80's/early 90's. And once in a while I pick up a new album from a new artist which I like very much. But as I said, it all depends on my mood. If I would say today what my favourite bands are, it could all have been changed tomorrow! Again, this is my personal opinion. If you'd ask someone else from Mangled you'd get a completely different answer. 14- Last words and a great thank you for your patience. Thank you for this interview. I hope we get the opportunity once to visit your country on the road and meet your readers. Meanwhile, stay brutal and GET MANGLED! Check out: MANGLED “Most Painful Ways” album OUT NOW!!!
